Matthew McConaughey has been hinting for months that he’s going to run for Texas governor. However, he could never seem to commit as to whether he was going to do so on the Republican or Democratic ticket. He wanted to stay neutral on so many of the issues plaguing the state and the nation.
Now, as more and more people are looking to the Hollywood actor for answers, he’s decided that he’s not going to run after all. Perhaps he realized that this job would require a bit more of his time than he’s willing to commit.
Alright, alright, alright. At least we know that he’s not going to run.
McConaughey posted a video to his Instagram account stating that politics is “a path that I’m choosing not to take at this moment.”
Within the video, he talked about how over the past two years, he’s been trying to figure out how to be the most useful going forward within his life. This includes being useful to himself, to his family, and to the most people. He’s been studying both state and national politics to determine if politics was the right way to be “useful.”
He talked about how there are problems that need to be fixed and divides that need healing.
“We gotta start shining a light on our shared values, the ones that cross party lines. The ones that build bridges instead of burn them.”
He’s making a number of strong points throughout his video. He talks about how great leaders serve…whether it’s a politician, a teacher, a CEO, or anyone who is willing to take on the responsibility and serve.
So, if McConaughey isn’t going to run for governor, what is he going to do?
To start, the Academy Award winner has stated that he’s going to invest some of the “bounty” that he has to support businesses and organizations that he believes are leaders. He wants to make sure that those organizations have a mission to serve and build trust “while also generating prosperity.” He exclaims that is the American dream.
It all comes down to this for McConaughey. While good politicians can help to lead and get us onto the right path, it is up to us individually to come together. We have common values and we need to make sure that we are coming together rather than dividing.
He believes that we have the freedom to be ourselves and we have a responsibility to be ourselves.
What McConaughey has shared is an important message. We have to remember that a governor, a senator, and even a president is only capable of providing so much change. We have to live in such a way that we can serve those around us and come together as a country.
Now, back to the Texas governor’s race…who are the candidates who have decided to run?
The race is for the November 2022 elections. With Matthew McConaughey choosing to step aside, that leaves us with the incumbent, Greg Abbott. We’ve also got Beto O’Rourke who has decided that he’s going to jump into the race. As for any others…well, there’s still time. McConaughey was actually polling ahead of Beto. So now, we have to wonder if McConaughey just handed the election to Beto or if there’s still a chance for a GOP win?
